I BOUGHT FROM EVERY DEALER I COULD TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE IN THEIR GRADING STANDARDS & AS A 9 YEAR OLD BOY I LEARNED FAST WHO WAS GOOD OR TERRIBLE BY THE TIME I WAS 11 YEARS OLD I HAD OVER 200 LARGE CENTS,
ALSO 1/2 CENTS. ONE DEALER SOLD LARGE CENTS IN BAGS OF 20 EACH HE
NEVER TOOK THE TIME TO GRADE THEM OR LOOK AT THE DATE . HE BOUGHT THEM FROM THE BANK OF BOSTON EVERY MONTH FOR 10 CENTS EACH. THE BAGS COST ME 25 CENTS PER COIN.
WE HAVE MANY NEW LARGE CENTS IN INVENTORY STARTING dec 2019 I WILL START CHECKING TO MAKE SURE WE CHANGE THE QUANTITY. ALL QUANTITIES CHECKED DECEMBER 2019 .
One thing I have heard for years SLABBED LARGE CENTS HAVE A N NUMBER AS A VARIETY ON THE HOLDER
Ask what it means & you get that is up to you to research.
You would think if you are going to sell a product with this statement you can assume the Dealer knows what it means.
I will try to show as many as I have time for.
Please: if you find a bargain price look close it usually is not. & how do you know it is a bargain ?
There are many price guides & none ever has the same price
Dont buy a coin unless it has a Grade on the coin holder.
Dont buy if the holder only says circulated.
Buy a photo grade book of ANA grading book. It will give you some basic + details on grades & what to look for
Always ask for a business card. Phone number that never gets answered .
I always state for me the easiest way to get in touch with me is my E-mail , E mail, web site.

1798 GOOD $190 1 ST HAIR STYLE
The 1700 Large Cents for some reason I can look at for hours. from the time I was 10 years old I liked the tall tails Ma called bull crap.
The 1798 Large Cent is is an amazing puzzle . Over the years I heard there were 1,842,000 with 4 or 5 Varieties.
Now back in 1962 I was able to buy 26 of this date & I paid 50 cents each . I 1963 I bought 29 for .75 cents each all had full date & Liberty & hair to the back of the head & dress lines. The 2 Banks in town would save any large cent for me & every 2 weeks I would go.& buy them for 10 Cents each
The 1798 First Hair Style was extremely confusing for me verses the #2 hair style. It took me 2 years to figure out the 2 different styles because I had no one to learn from. Every Coin I drew how the coin looked. Then out of the blue ons using a red crayon I found 9 coins with a extra curl & the rest did not have this curl. Still I wasent sure I really found something until latter when Coin Dealer Mr Beeby explained the 2 varieties.
S-144 1798 First Hair style most were GOOD & VG porous
This variety S-144 with a die crack left of OF across the top & to the right. The surfaces had some corrosion & some had more.
I found out this was typical for this year & style. This is usually found in low grade & porous
$-145 1878 First Hail Style Recognized by a die chip . Not found in High Grades. I saw the neck to bulge not straight like I was told.
S148 First Hair Style . On the reverse you find a die crack througt the top of NITED in united but is not strong. You have to look for it.
It also has weak hair above the ear back . Most First Hair have a large 8 in the date.

The 1801 Drapped Bust LARGE CENT has a inventory of 1,326,837 with 3 Major varieties & all errors will be found on the REVERSE of the coin The Rarest & most expensive Variety is the 3 ERRORS
The coin has 1/000 fraction along with 1 stem on the bottom of the branches where there should be 2 stems.
The letter U in UNITED was originally engraved upside down assumption was by mistake becoming Inverted resulting in an inverted U The mistake was corrected & the coin was struck a 2nd time with a U over an inverted U. This resulted in doubling of the serifs on the top & bottom of the letters. If you dont look close it looks like 2 separate letters an I & I & now looks like INITED.
Number 2 Variety is not as severe as the 3 ERRORS VARIETY with only one error with the Fraction 1/000
instead of 1/100 to show it was 1 Cent.
Over the last 58 years I have shown Coin Dealers this variety in their inventory & not one ever said thank you. In 2009 I stopped showing
the error to dealers. There is no real price changes untilll you reach VF & EF & the price changes become large.
Number 3 Variety is 1/000 was corrected with the 1/100 fraction struck over the 1/000 part of the O cn usually clearly br seen under the 1 in 100.
The lettering along with other designs were repunched into the die by hand creating several errors for Draped Bust Large Cents .
Lower grades of this variety are requested more than the higher grades. Price has a lot to do with purchasing.

There are 2 styles S272 = blunt 1 & S273 Pointed 1
The S272 is one of the rarest Draped Bust Cent varieties. The S273 overdate is more common.
We bought an average of 2,000 Large Cents a year all through 1970 & 1980
Walter Breen spent many hours at our back up table taking Large Cents out of the dark yellow envelopes that I graded & he re graded
or agreed with my grade & placing the variety on the envelope always explaining his finding usually at the Santa Clara Coin convention
Rudy Christianson held .Walter would stop at the store & he would go in the office & work like a kid in a candy store, like me.
He told me my grading was good but my knowledge of Varieties needed a lot of help & I 100% agreed on the Varieties.
If you buy Slabbed Coins I dont think you will find more than 300 1807/6 coins . Many are bought & broken out by collectors.
Most of the mintage you will find in lower grades because a large Cent at this time 1807 was a lot of money.

1813 is a scarce coin with a mintage of 418,000 & 2 Varieties S290 + & S292
It is well known for its problems from AG to UNC. S292 Reverse Denticlesare usually not seen on the coin.
EF & higher are conditionally rare P total slab=290 + N= 150 out of a inventory minted of 418,000
I have only seen 1 in MS65 Slab , 2 in MS64 Slab , 1 in MS63 Slab
The Classic Head Large Cent have always been notorious for their condition scarcity.
I found over 200 coins without most of the denticles around the reverse rim.
The 1813 was one of the great example I used in my grading class for many years
Most I found with a dark surface that was known for the year for this scarce type.
Like many of the Large Cents I was able to retain for teaching 80 each from AG to EF. In EF I never have found more than 18 that I
was able
Most of the time I found the 1813 to be worn with corrosion & never really found more than 2 each that looked like a clone.

The N2 again the most Iv seen in over 60 years has a Rim Break between Stars 8 to 10 & 11 & repunched N in ONE bottom left.
N4 the OF is far to the right of STATES
N5 is rarely seen especially in high grades usually a very blunt strike on the obverse.
N7 re punched O in ONE

Over the years so called experts almost every one I met in 1960-1970 with their stinky big fat cigars puffing smoke told me there was only 2 varieties.
I had already found 6 different varieties
There are 10 Varieties . 5 are known to b Common & 5 are Scarce bu what many people tell you.
My findings over the years of buying over 2 600 coins is a little different .
I find N2 -N3 -N5- N8 -N9 & N10 to be Common
I find N10 to be over the years the most common with a great looking crack that travels all the way around the coin. This shows how bad the dies were. But, these are my findings & some one else may have different findings..
N 5 Cracks begin at a denticle left of the date & joins the first 3 stars.
N 6 Die crack reverse bottom STATES to ER in AMERICA. The Obverse has slight doubling in peripherals
N 7 faint die cracks joining star 6 & 7

they treat you & that they can influence you in your life. I met Aubrey & Adeline Bebee at a coin convention & Adeline came up to me moving guys out of the way & said you look lost. I was the only kid on the convention floor.I had my bag of Large Cents & tried to talk to dealers who kept telling me to get out of the way of the men looking at coins. I did not know Adeline but she had a nice face. She had me
go behind there table & sit . She said this is Aubrey. He was real busy with customers. Adeline came back with a hamburger & coke & other food & we all sat & ate. Aubrey asked me what I had in the bag & I proudly showed him. He told me a lot of things about coins & stamps.
from Foreign Countries & the U.S. Adeline took me for a walk around the floor & moved people out of the way so I could look at the coins.
Adeline brought me out to the bus stop when it was time for me to leave , gave me a brown paper bag it was heavy & she said do not open this until you get home. The bag had 10 Large Cents & 20 each dollar size Foreign Coins mostly from South America in the bag.
That was when I really decided I wanted to become a Coin Dealer in life but a artist ,a police man & then a soldier first. I remembered & wrote down on the way home most of what Aubrey told me. In the bag I found 8 each 1823 Large Cents with a note. Look at each coin put on paper what you see on each one tape it to the paper & mail all of them back to me. He even put a $1.00 bill in the bag. He sent them back to me with information on each coin I did not see to write down plus he sent me 10 more coins & said you can have this new bunch for $1.00 but you have to do the same & send them back to me. I became a coin dealer first.
I met them many time up until l 1990 & one day I heard he passed away in Omaha. I never saw Adeline again.
The 1823 N 2 Large Cent is a coin you may never see in Mint State , but it is still a key date in Large Cents

The 1831 Large Cent has a mintage of 3,359,260 . There are several varieties . This is a very popular Coin.
One is the Large Letters within this variety there are 14 other varieties numbered 1 - 14. The Scarcest are #8 #9 #10 & #14.
The second Variety is the Medium Letters & within this variety there are 5 varieties , The scarcest are #4 & #5
You will need pictures of the Large Letters & this Medium Letters & really study the differences. This is a great challenge.
Large Letters N 1 variety is very common with the Obverse has a die crack through the top of the date & several stars in either direction.
Medium Letters N2 is usually easy to see with several of the stars are out to the rim plus different spots of rim crumbling. The boarder
from 1:00 - 2:00 is much narrower than the rest of the coin. Rim crumbling I found located only in the same spots..
Medium Letters N3 is a coin I was able to have 16 to compare & all had the same of center left not extreme . The boarder is wider on the right side & narow on the left. . Stars were flat usually from 6-12 o clock.
Medium Letters N4 was a surpris with a full boarder but againe more along the right side & I find out of 22 coins no fading or weak .
You will find the the reverse with cracks as usual & the best is the normal easy to spot weak E in CENTS looks like a die problem.

This is a Variety N6 with a rim cud above star 6 with a interesting story to me. I always enjoy the History behind a coin.
In 1939 a small machine shop in Northern California took all the Large Cents he could & had a boy sit every day & use a hand drill to
make different size holes in the coin. It was the only way to acquire copper for making different size washers & parts for clocks. There was little copper within 200 miles of his small town. I bought several coins from this family but they would not let me buy the ledger with the history. I did read in his ledger that he also made fire place screens & it took 250 large cent to be flattened heated & forged together.
The 1836 mintage was 2,111,000 & I have found 7 different varieties N3 is one I bought the most with a rim break over Star 6 finding 294. The next Variety I bought the most of was N6 with rim cud between Star 7 & 8.
All the 1836 Large Cents are the new style of Portrait created 1/2 way through 1835 coinage.
The next Variety I seen a lot of is N2 & I think this is the most common Variety
Red is not a color Iv seen on a 1836 Large Cent but I have seen some with light red around the stars never bright.
I have seen a total of 19 slabbed 1836 Large Cents & the last time I looked I think there are around 36-40 but Im not sure because I am not a fan of any coin becoming a Commodity controlled by a hand full of wealthy Coin Dealers.

After examining 2,321 1839 I found through Walter Breen guidence the first the Head of the 1836 was the oldest Variety this was with
a plain cord where I found most 1839 Large Cent with a beaded cord.

I acquired 102 of these coins in the mail sent to my house in 1966 when I was still in the Army in Asia.
This was one of my favorite coins. At this time grading was simple with Good, VG, Fine, VF, AU & UNC . You could grade a coin & also change the points in your car . There were no computers & the GOOD 6 & VERY GOOD 8.& 10, FINE 15, VF 25 ,30, 35 DID NOT
EXIST EF was EF AU was AU & a UNC was a UNC. not the continues bouncing like the Stock Market that it is today. But times change & Slabbing is now the it.. I do like the Slabbing only for preserving a truly UNC Coin
N4 Die cracks through the tops of UNT & Star 6 has no lines or just small marks sometimes visible
N7 I did not know this was as scarce as it has become at the time. It had die lines through the 8 & 4 on the inside. Walter Breen really liked this variety.
N9 has a crack from a reverse die cud at the rim under the left ribbon. Die cud is visible without a 5 power glass.die crack through the D
in UNITED & the 2nd T in STATES starting from the left of the T to the top of the rim. Another crack left of O across the top of both, Then a crack of right top of F to the rim..
Crack top of M in AMERICA through top of E & R then back up to the rim.
There is at times a bump on Liberties upper lip..
N11 Cud on rim over 3 & 4 in the date. Star 13 very weak sometime only 1/2 or less showing
N12 Cud at the rim over Star 3
N15 Die break over U in UNITED
All 102 were used in my Large Cent class. I used 100 ungraded & no Variety information coins that I had purchased a year before from Rudy Christians first Coin show in San Jose California.

This is the first coin I have seen with Star 12 weak & Star 13 almost not visible with strong deep cut hair curls above the stars.
1846 Braided Hair Large Cent has 3 Varieties sometimes not easy to distinguish unless you have looked at several.
You have a SMALL DATE, A MEDIUM DATE & A TALL DATE There are 15 different Die Varieties.
When ever I mention a Die Variety it is from my evaluating my own coins to find the N#
I HAVE 290 MORE 1846 LARGE CENTS IN THE SAFE BUT I HAVE MANY OTHER COINS TO GRADE

1847 Braided Hair Large Cent has 30+ varieties . A fantastic coin to try to acquire all the Varieties. It is an exciting date.
The N19 is the one Variety I have sold over 68 from 1970-1992. It has a repunching on the upper parts of the Crossbar on the 4.
Latter dates show die chips left of the R in Liberty. Sometimes you need a 5 to 10 power magnifier..
N1 Bold re punched date. You really can see this at the bottom left of the 1 & the 4.
N4 18 repunched both top & bottom. Nice bold strike through beneath E in ONE. This is sean with vust your eys no glass needed.
N7 Rim cud between4 & 7 oclock on the rim. Ive sold 42 but most had the cud under star 1 than star 2
N8 This is a bold struck coin except for Star 5 that is much weaker most of the time missed by people . Also LI in Liberty weak.
N13 Heave cracks mostly across AMERICA
N14 I have only seen 26 mostly in a VF condition thr 1 in the date is far left.
N27 Bold repunch under the base of the 1 & the 8.

1849 Braided Hair Large Cent to my knowledge there are 29 Varieties. Most of the Varieties are Common. Most I have not seen.
N2 is the variety I have seen the most with the top of CE in Cent crumbling.
N7 The 18 is slightly re punched at the top. I needed to look with a 5 power glass most of the time.
N8 I have only seen 6 with a re punched 9 to the right of the bottom of the 9 usually very strong
N12 I liked this Variety that so many people miss . The upright of the 1 is partially past the bust tip
Every Large Cent Class I held every one totally missed this variety except for my History Professor at Stanford.
N15 is one of my favorite 1849 Large Cents There is a line through the middle of the O in OF many have the rim break over Star 7.Star 8 & Star 9.. I found several with the break that is weak & some strong.
N16 This was tough for me to find & after looking at over 3,000 coins I found 4 with crumbling inside the bottom of the 9.
N22 This was another variety Walter Breen told me about only because he found 2 in a bag of 100 Large Cents I bought from Norm I knew for many years he Lover Hobo Nickles . There is a small die line behind the curl on the neck. Honestly I kept missing it.
N27 I like this variety simple to find sometimes without a glass . There is a spike line from the dentils to Star 9.

1851 Large Cent has a mintage of 9,889,707 to me this is an astonishing quantity for a Large Cent.
This is a coin that as you look at them you will find many with a blurry detail from such a high minted quantity.
This also makes the 1851 a common coin with an amazing 42 varieties .
I have never seen all 42 varieties I have seen N1 N2 N26 N28 N34 & N45
On 11/1/1999 I acquired a couple new Varieties N5 & N45 This N45 is better than I have seen before.
A Coin Dealer told me he bought a hand full of large Cents & saw I had a lot on display. He went back to his booth & brought them to me.
I bought the coins & put them on the back table to look at in the Hotel that night. I like the comfort of home & try to stay at a hotel that
has a stove , micro wave , a refrigerator plus for comfort it is worth the money . I do not like eating in a restaurant any more. I like to cook my own stake or hamburg & I know the food was prepared with my two cleaned hands.
I bought a lot of coins during the day mostly slabbed Morgans hard to find in the grade it states on the holder. I think the grading companies are not doing a very good job any more. Also Its nice to have a glass of wine that dident cost $14 plus I have more to keep in the refrigerator
There were 12 Large Cents & they were typical circulated 1851 coins.
Four coins stuck out to me as coins I had not seen before & I found out I was correct. Two coins were N5 & 2 coins were N45 . These coins are struck from the same obverse die. Also if you look at a lot of the 1851 Large Cents you will see the date shows it is further to the right of any die variety. I checked my photos in my files on my computer
N 1 has heavy lie lines some around star 4
N 2 this variety you can see with a naked eye . It has a good size verticle scrape or gouge which ever you want to call it
on the neck above the 8 in the date
NEW IS A N 6 You will find re punching on the 1 in the sate . The 6 I just purchased are weak all in the same areas & the 1 in the date are all weak in the same place.
N 26 There are lines & small lumps on the ONE CENT N has a line on the left in the middle of the - N the E has the same thing -E
N 27 I found a stack of Large Cents sitting in a box in a dealers case & he had a sign for $10.00 each . At the end of the coin show I noticed he still had the coins & I asked him what he needed for them all . He said he had the large cents for over 10 years & no one ever looked at them. There were 42 coins & he said $1 so I bought them all. Back home I put them in the office draw no time to lok at them yet. Three weeks later I took them out placed them on a black felt board before opening & looked at them. On 2 coins I noticed I saw lumps & pulled them aside. That night before I went home I looked at my notes in the computer & saw one of the most dificult varieties & they had the same die lumps on the top right of the N in ONE. I sent them to a friend of mine & he confirmed they were N27.
This is a hard variety to find & I was very lucky.
N 34 OF almost completely flat under OF leaves weak
N 45 sometimes hard to find in less late into production to see the crack in coronet
The most fun variety to find is 1851/81 When people describe this variety it sounds confusing What it is is a Normal Date sitting over
an inverted date. When as many times there is not enough time to do every thing correct the failure to notice the date punch was inverted. This can happen for many different reasons. As time went on the punch was corrected & the date into the die then they regrinded the date down. Still a larger story This is a very popular variety
Things to look for the 5 has a small loop under the top also has a quarete c on the left bottom the 1 has a line on the right in the middle of the - 1 also a line above the 1

The 1853 Large Cent has a mintage of 6,641,131 it is a nice looking coin with more weak & soft strikes than usual .
I find a lot of EF coins without a full ear or hair over or in front of the ear in one particular slab company.
You will find many Un circulated coins with carbon spots above or on the top of the ear..
Usually soft struck stars all around the coin . Usually a soft chocolate brown.
Many coins have a weak 5 .
I have placed 80 each in stock with a total inventory of 460 . I had 500 in stock for my Large Cent grading classes.
Since 1970 I have sold 310 mostly VG & Fine.
You will find several variety from the left center of coins. If you look at auctions you will find 3 show up for auction year after year.
N 1 Light repunched 1 under the 1 & you may need a 5 or 10 power glass to really see this. Sometimes you dont.
N 3 Lump above the T in LIBERTY & look at the date placement.
N 6 Has a delicate Die Crack at top parts of UNITED STATES mostly seen above UNI & TATES

The 1854 Large Cent has a mintage of 4,236,136 & is a coin with 30 Varieties with 6 Very Common, 11 Common, 8 Scarce, & 5 Very Scarce.. You will find almost 2,000 slabbed with over 200 in MS64. I have bought 36 in MS64 for customers & the grading was very good.
This year has surprised me with over 400 slabbed under MS60.
The one thing I have found with this year is it has a typical strike of several years near it except it was found having weakness at the point of the coronet & latter strikes sometimes dont show the fullline on the top of the L in LIBERYY .Many do not show all the hair over the ear
& it is also noted on MS60 - MS63 coins. You will find most Slabbed 1854 Large Cents do not show on the holder a N Number. I was told in 1996 the reason was if the N# was not on the packaging of the coin when it was submitted for slabbing there was not enough time to look the variety up because slabbing is an assembly line where you only have so much time to look at a coin .
I have not handled a lot of varieties for the 1854 except.
N10 This is a coin you have to look at with a 5 power glass to find.
There are vertical lines from BER down through the curls of the ear >the will be lines in front of the Ear.
There are other lines not easy to locate. A Curving line from the right side of the Yin Liberty & sometimes a tougher line to locate a line from the top right of the T in UNITED to the dentils over the E. I looked at 76 coins with a 10 power glass before I found everything.
N 22 is one of the reasons I say & I wonder about Varieties & who does this.
This varietie I have only found 6 total . You really have to be looking for it to find it.
There is a black or light gray spot between the ribbon end & the U in UNITED .
All you have to do is tip the coin so you are looking at UNITED & the spot will be on the left bottom of the U.

1855 LARGE CENT MINTAGE 1,574,829 You will read most of the time there are 3 Varieties for the 1855 Large Cent.
#1 is Upright 55 , #2 Slanted 55 , #3 Knob on the ear. These are the major varieties.
In total there are 13 varieties that I know of
N 4 is one you may need a glass to see the 2 lumps below Libertys ear lobe & a pair of faint die lines on N in CENTS.
I have found most lumps to be one under under the ear lobe & one on the cheek close to the ear
The K 9 is the Knob on the Ear . I have been told for years this is a Common Variety. I have only seen & bought 22 since 1956.
N 10 is the Slanted 55 again said to be a very common & I see over the years many more Upright 55 coins.
I have a friend of mine whos Father was born 1855 & He passed away in 1935 at age 80 the same year my friend Lincoln was born
in the middle of a major snow storm in Main 16 + inches of snow. Lincoln was born in the barn when his Mom was milking the cows.
His Dad had a heart attack walking from the house to the barn.
Lincoln & I met when I was 9 years old hunting turkey & have been good friends from day one. In 1955 Lincoln wanted to make a memorial to his Dad .For 55 years until the year 2010 he bought every circulated 1855 Large Cent he could find. He still owns the 47 acre farm in Main his Dad was born on lived & died on & it is 22 miles from a paved road up against Federal land. Many of his family are buried in the cemetery his Grand Father created beside the original house. Lincolns 4 sons all bought 50 acre sections surrounding the original homestead. Lincoln built a 30 foot high cross out of old railroad tracks welding them together & placed it in the middle of the cemetery. There was a train track that went to Canada dismantled in 1960 & Lincoln acquired 140 rails & used them to build the upright structures for his cow barn. He built the cross with left over tracks. Over the years Lincoln bought over 1600 each 1855 Large Cents & every one he welded to the cross in memory of a Dad he never had the chance to know. In the 1960 time the Large Cent was still used in change as well as the 1/2 Cent, 2 Cent, 3 Cent nickel & Silver & more.

The 1857 Large Cent has 5 Varieties . To my knowledge #N1 #N2 & # N3 have been very common since 1970. Not known to be Common 1950 through 1965. Was a Semi Rare Coin. #N 5 & # N6 are Proof.
The 1857 Large Cent has an interesting story. First it is the less minted with only 333,456 for both varieties. It was a time where many Large Cents were falling out of favor at least that was the story. I can say I used Large Cents all the way up to 1960 in any store I went into on the East Coast. I acquired many on my towns daily news paper delivery. The smaller cent was upcoming because it dident cost as much to produce But the 1857 Large Cent was not one you found most of the time.
If you look at slabbing the Large Date with a total of close to 325. The Small Date has even less at under 50.
Large Dates I found a die punch in between U & N looks like a upside down thin T it is to thin for an I.
Many under the 8 I find a extra Dentil left corner of the 8.. Several high grades have stars with partial lines not deep .
Dentils are thin on the left side from UNITED to ST on STATES. these are all N1 varieties.
The 1857 Small Date Die lines connecting UNIT in UNITED to the Dentils are faintly visible to most people & a magnifier is required
usually a 10 power. Typical weakness in the stars.
The right side of any 1857 Large Cent I have handled had a strong die strike.
Stars on right side many have lines except they start disapearing in AU down to Good.
I finD many that do not show the top of the L in LIBERTY. Iv seen AU58 Slabbed with 1/2 of the L missing
